In my book Harness the Power Within and Without. I share practical tips for living a righteous lifestyle, how to build your mind, body, and spirit under the Kingdom of Heaven. In this article I share an excerpt from my book regarding how to build the spirit. This is what has helped me develop a very powerful spirit based on righteous/Godly knowledge. I am certain it will help you as well.
The spirit is the part of us that desires morality, values, and longs to do the right thing. Depending on what you allow in your mind your spirit can be overrun by negative external influences if you are not careful you can become desensitized. When this happens positive inspiration of which God is the origin diminishes and you become even more enticed by negative superficial, man made influences. Being influenced by man made things is not all bad. However there are many man made influences that can be considered self destructive evidenced by the results produced.
- Drug use results in jail time, and addiction.
- Excessive partying and drunkenness, results in, Alcoholism, DUI’s, vehicular manslaughter, and jail time.
- Marital infidelity or the so called “being a player” results in, divorce, domestic violence, kids suffering etc.
this is just a small example of the negative man made influences of our society. People fall into the previous situations because drug use, drunkenness, and marital infidelity or immorality, are just some of the many things that get glamorized by TV shows, pick one of the many;
- events like spring break
- happy hour
- and the night life environment
As a result of the glamour people are inspired by these things. What’s worse is a life style based solely on this negative inspiration soon develops an intense appetite for it and loses the ability to tell the difference between negative and positive. People develop reasons or justifications for why they are inspired by these things. In the minds of people like this bad becomes good too. Here is the trap remember a paragraph ago I mentioned man made influences like movies, music, etc. Well people in the lime light who shun responsibility for their actions, by saying they are not mentors or role models, or saying there is nothing wrong with their behavior, the same wittingly or unwittingly help glamorize negative inspiration. As stated before all man made influences are not bad, however, doesn’t it seem like society as a whole gravitates toward negative inspiration? The lesson here is to protect the inside. Inside of you is what is most powerful and most importantly what’s most vulnerable. In the Shu Ha Ri Do symbol I use fire to symbolize the spirit with good reason because when you feed a fire it becomes an inferno. Would you want a fire that burns inside you for the wrong things? That’s the vulnerability of our spirit it’s synonymous with passion, desire, and drive, you must take care not to be driven by the wrong things. To harness the power of the spirit you must take a spiritual inventory through meditation and introspection or contemplation. I have mentioned choosing or filtering what goes through the eyes and ears in other articles. Well the eyes are without a doubt the windows to the soul or spirit and how do most thieves enter houses?
Yes, through the window. To be specific this thief is seeking to steal control over what fuels or inspires you, what you love, hate, your ambitions, or drives. So our goal regarding the spirit should be to control methods of entry which would be what you hear & see. Moreover, when you must hear or see something, like when watching a movie, or when with associates or co-workers, or simply because we live in this world. You must filter out the impurities through meditation and introspection, meditating on or contemplating the positive knowledge and godly concepts you’ve read seen
or heard. You can view this as a spiritual inventory making sure the foundation of positive knowledge that you have worked so hard to establish is not being worn away. Meditation and introspection help you remember that there is such a thing as morality, ethics, and godliness. As human beings we are not just creatures of instinct or habit, we can cognitively harness and channel the powers of all three plains of our existence into predetermined goals. We as human beings must remember that external influences i.e. the thief is seeking to harness those same powers that we possess so as to channel those powers into their predetermined goals. Remember also, that your spirit is the most vulnerable part of your existence it is also the most powerful part of your existence. It is the power within that’s stirred by thought, of which thought is stirred by what you see & hear. Ask yourself what am I building within. Develop the courage to look within and tell the truth about who you are, do not justify. Do not rationalize if it means facing the reality that you are in worse shape spiritually than you ever thought, do it. Be introspective take daily spiritual inventory. Take courage and the sword of the spirit (a) and go within.
